TENS Unit (Review)

Today I want to share my thoughts on a "entry" level TENS Unit that use and recommend...the trūMedic PL-009

If you've never heard of or used a TENS unit before then you're in for a treat.

TENS Unit Review

Lacking some of the bells and whistles of more expensive units but gets the job done.

User Friendly

Super easy to use with preprogrammed programs for different areas of the body makes it a relative "no-brainer"

For $30 you can't beat the price!

Summary: The trūMedic PL-009 offers an excellent entry level unit for those looking for a inexpensive yet effective unit. While there are other TENS units out there with additional settings this unit has enough functionality for most users.

  • Great price for the value of the unit
  • Uses regular batteries - other units use expensive lithium batteries
  • Independent controls for two areas of the body
  • Lacks more advanced settings of pricier models
  • Portable but larger than other models - no belt clip

Being in the health and fitness arena, I'm always looking for techniques that can help with recovery. Keeping in mind that each method will have it's place depending on the situation, as well as it's pro's and con's.

Enter the TENS Unit...

Before I go any further, if you're not familiar with what a TENS unit is, the acronym stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.

TENS units work by sending electrical impulses along the skin and into the nerves around the area of the pad/electrode placement.

One thing to keep in mind is that relief from a TENS unit session is often temporary. However, that's often enough to get through a period of discomfort while utilizing other methods of recovery (ice/heat therapy, epsom salt baths, corrective exercises, etc.)

As you can see in the video below, I'm using the TENS unit across my bicep and forearm joint to help with some tendonitis pain.

Please note that I personally like the intensity on the higher side but it's not necessary and completely up to the user to determine.

One thing to keep in mind is that a TENS unit can NOT be used everywhere. There are areas like the front of the neck, the chest, etc that can be contraindicative - please consult with the literature, your doctor or other medical professional for more information.

Again...this is one of MANY tools in an arsenal of pain management and recovery. If you haven't utilized a TENS unit before this might be the perfect time and model for you.

The trūMedic PL-009 comes complete with:

  • TENS Unit
  • 2 Electrode Lead Wires
  • 4 AAA Batteries
  • Quick Start Guide

I'd love to hear your experience with this or any other TENS unit in the comments below.
